Networking Do’s and Don’ts

25 Aug

Networking can be an excellent way to meet like-minded people and potential clients and ultimately boost your business, but so often people make critical networking mistakes that can make them feel that networking is waste of time. Here are some DO’S AND DON’TS which will help you become a Networking STAR!

  1. DON’T EVER RUN OUT OF BUSINESS CARDS- There is no excuse to not network without your business cards. It is unprofessional and shows people you did not prepare.
  2. DON’T SPEND WAY TOO MUCH TIME WITH ANY ONE PERSON- There is always a limitation of time at networking events. Strategize an exit plan so you have enough time to speak to as many people as you can within the amount of time.
  3. DON’T DRINK TOO MUCH AT A NETWORKING EVENT- Particularly at evening events. When you are networking you are advertising your business. It is the same as when you are placing an ad in the newspaper.
  4. DON’T FEEL BAD IF YOU DO NOT FOLLOW UP WITH EVERYONE YOU MEET! IT’S OK!- It is not possible to keep in touch with everyone you meet anyway. With that being said, make sure you do follow up with people you want to build a relationship with.
  5. DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT 5 PEOPLE/ INDUSTRIES YOU WANT TO MEET- Start thinking strategically ; how are you going to expand your network with quality contacts that will help drive quality networking results?
  6. DO HAVE AN UP TO DATE LINKEDIN PROFILE BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE OFFICE- Your new contacts will verify your LinkedIn profile to verify your business credentials and experience.
  7. DO HAVE SOCIAL QUESTIONS READY- In business “people buy people” You do not need to talk all about business. Actually when you add personal aspects into your conversations, you will be remembered and this is a great way to build long term relationships.
  8. DO WIDEN YOUR LOCATION BY NETWORKING OUTSIDE YOUR LOCAL ZIP CODE- If you are serious about building your network you need to consider expanding your location. The more variety of contacts you have, the better.
  9. DO THINK OF YOUR BUSINESS IMAGE BEFORE LEAVING THE HOUSE- What is your image saying about you or your business. It takes 30 seconds for someone to make a perception of you. When you look professional, you will be received as a professional.
  10. DO LISTEN MORE THAN YOU TALK- We have two ears and one mouth, so that we can listen twice as much as we talk. When you listen more you will be able to find out how your business services can help them.

All the Best to your Success!
